There are errors in the official Korean War Casuality data bases.  This includes some of the men who were in TFS.   Some of these errors I can verify.

Gimlet4ever notes: Harold Fancher was captured July 5, 1950. This is verified because he had signed the Red Cross list with other TFS POWs dated July 17, 1950. He also has been identified in the Task Force Smith POW Seoul photos taken by North Koreans a few days after they were captured.  Francher is listed as being captured on July 12, 1950 in the Official Korean War Casualty Data Bases.  I know that there may be others who are listed like this as well.  Albert Vincent is another POW Casualty who also signed the Red Cross List with other TFS POW’s.

There was a series of rifle shots along the defensive perimeter line as the NK’s exterminated the wounded.

 

C Company First Sergeant was Harvey N. Bailey who found himself alone after firing into the massed infantry for about five hours. After he exhausted the last of the ammunition from his M1 rifle, he could see thousands of NK soldiers sweep forward toward him. Bullets and grenades fell profusely around his foxhole and Bailey was struck in the hand. He rolled over onto his back, cut off a piece of his sleeve and wrapped it around the wound. When he looked up, dozens of North Koreans had surrounded him, their bayonets aimed threateningly at him. He reluctantly stood up and lifted his arms above his head, his blood soaking his sleeve. A WWII veteran and originally a cavalry trooper, Bailey had determined to remain calm. Despite the fact that he was shivering from the wetness and cold, desperately hungry and faint from pain and loss of blood, he yawned  as though he saw little excitement in being surrounded by enemy soldiers. As his adrenalin rush subsided he recognized the condition of clinical depression which followed combat. A champion football player at Amarillo high school Sandies, as he stood alone on that hill above Osan, he towered over the North Koreans at six foot three and a fat-free 220 pounds. For the next three years, his captors would make him suffer for being so tall.

As the sounds of battle faded away, a few North Korean officers awkwardly approached Bailey and motioned with their weapons for him to march ahead of them across the field toward Suwon. Bailey glanced back as he headed north. Smoke and mist hung heavy over the battlefield, making it difficult to see. 

In the hazy distance farther away near the road he made out a group of Americans surrounded by North Koreans. These, he decided later, must have been some of the artillerymen.

The North Koreans found it great fun to jab the Americans with their bayonets. As the captives passed formations of NKs marching south, they were continually harassed and spit upon. After a mile or so, Bailey was joined by Gonzales, and a few other mostly privates from the 21^st Infantry. They halted and an officer shouted at them to remove their boots and jackets then forced them to stand at attention off the road in a miserable muck-filled ditch. The officer then stripped each man of all his personal effects, jerking off watches, pulling wedding rings and looting the contents of their wallets.  Bailey watched out of the corner of his eye as the officer opened each wallet, pulled out photos of the men’s wives and children then spit on each picture before tossing it into the mud. Staring straight ahead, Bailey readied himself to die. He had no wish to commit suicide, but this was too much. He made up his mind that when the officer spit on Maxine’s picture or the pictures of his children, he was going to seize the officer by the throat and try his best to break the smaller man’s neck before the guards could shoot him.

 

Fortunately, when it came Bailey’s turn, the officer could not figure out how to work the zipper on his Texas-style billfold. After a few minutes of cursing, futile jerking and pulling, the wallet with it precious photographs and a hundred dollars of recent pay flew into the crap oozing up along the bottom of the muddy ditch. After a few more humiliations came several loud and incoherent political speeches. Bailey never forgot when the officer proudly boasted of his county’s greatest achievement.

 

“Soon” the officer shouted with bright eyes directly into Bailey’s face.      ” … every citizen in the People’s Republic of Korea would own their own flashlight.”

 

After more harangues, the men were marched north through mud for another hour or two. In near complete darkness, the line halted and the men were herded into a smelly dirt-floored farmhouse where they fell exhausted onto the floor.

Bailey recognized several of his fellow prisoners of war. Although he did not know him yet, the senior man was Captain Ambrose H. Nugent of Battery A, 52nd Artillery. Another officer, a platoon leader in the 21st Infantry 2nd Lt. Jansen C. Cox seemed unwounded. Msgt. Harvey T. Vann, Sgt. Martin A. Strahan and mostly wounded privates and several corporals were herded into the farm house. These were the last surviving representatives of the disaster known as the Smith Task Force.

The American prisoners were marched through the mud several miles to a holding point at the Suwon rail terminal. (Work in Progress, this is the first rough draft.
